The IAS promotes and coordinates African studies in 12 subject groups distributed over four of the six faculties of the University of Bayreuth. This broad range of disciplines within African studies is unique in the German-speaking countries. The IAS is also responsible for coordinating research and teaching, training junior researchers, and promoting the exchange of information between persons and institutions engaged in research and teaching in or on Africa.

The Institute for African Studies is one of the institutes of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne, Germany. Research and teaching in the Institute focuses on the languages and literature, as well as on the history and cultures of Africa south of the Sahara. The main emphasis is given to the analysis and description of the more than 2000 African languages.

Der MA Afrikanistik und unser Schwerpunkt im MA Empirische Sprachwissenschaft (MA-ES) sind für fortgeschrittene Studierende konzipiert, die ihre erworbenen Grundkenntnisse vertiefen wollen. Das international ausgerichtete Promotionsstudium richtet sich an die besonders qualifizierten Absolventinnen und Absolventen, die im Bereich universitäre Lehre, Forschung und Entwicklung arbeiten möchten.
Institute of African Studies, University of Leipzig
African Studies in Leipzig is following a broad understanding of area studies. In order to understand the continent’s cultural, historical, political, social and linguistic conditions in the present and past (with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa), Leipzig African Studies privileges a combination of humanities and the social sciences. Thus, teaching and research at the Institute of African Studies is made up of three fields: African languages and literatures, history and culture, and economy and politics in Africa.
Department of Anthropology and African Studies, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
The department covers a broad spectrum in both teaching and research activities. These include not only classical topics in anthropology, but also the politics and sociology of development, modern popular culture (particularly literature, music, theatre and film), and the languages of Africa. The focus of the curriculum and research programme rests on modern Africa. In all these endeavours collaboration with African colleagues plays a central role. On the one hand, the department invites and supports colleagues, PhD candidates and M.A. students from Africa. On the other hand, staff members are teaching at African partner institutions. Teaching and research are going hand in hand, and advanced students are actively involved in research projects.
